| Aikido is a Japanese martial art developed in the
1920's by Morihei Ueshiba (O'Sensei). The objective
of the Aikido training is not to think of defeating
your enemy, but to be in harmony with him or her physically
and spiritually. This is why Aikido is sometimes called
the "art of peace," the "art of non-resistance" or
the "non-fighting martial art." Aikido is
not merely an art of self-defense. It closely approaches
non-violence, recognizing the importance of intention
and the mind.
The practice involves much internal and external perceptual development and growth.
Into its techniques are woven elements of philosophy, psychology, and dynamics.
As you learn the various arts, you will train your mind, improve your health,
and develop deeper awareness, balance and self-confidence. The pathway is, as
O'Sensei put it "…not a technique to fight or defeat an enemy. It
is the way to reconcile the world and make human beings one family."
Ultimately, "Budo (the Martial Way) is not felling the opponent by our force;
nor is it a tool to lead the world into destruction with arms. True Budo is to
accept the spirit of the universe, keep the peace of the world, correctly produce,
protect, and cultivate all things in nature." - O'Sensei
